Gary Ingram, a certified golf course superintendent (CGCS) at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, Calif., is the overall winner of the prestigious 2014 Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards presented jointly by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and Golf Digest. Overall, 16 superintendents were recognized at the national and regional levels for a proven commitment to environmental stewardship.

Ingram, along with Metropolitan Golf Links General Manager Shelley Hara, were members of a Northern California True Market Solutions Sustainability Circle which completed in March of this year.

The Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards recognize golf course superintendents and their courses for overall course management excellence and best management practices in the areas of water conservation, water quality management, energy conservation, pollution prevention, waste management, wildlife and habitat conservation, communication and outreach, and leadership.

In a recent email congratulating Ingram, Tom Isaak, President of CourseCo, Inc. wrote “CourseCo properties have 35 ELGA Awards (eight at Metro!) since the program began, including two Overall plus a National Public.  But each year, as consciousness of the fundamental meaning of sustainability grows in the industry, the country, and even the world, there is more meritorious work being done by golf course managers; and thus the Awards are harder to achieve.  This is a good thing — for golf and for the planet — and simply means we will have to work still smarter and harder to maintain our unique position in the industry.  Our commitment to Sustainability Circles with True Market Solutions acknowledges this.”

A number of CourseCo member golf courses have completed or have recently joined a Sustainability Circle.
